A Different Point of View

By Molly Meyerhofer

Let’s be honest folks when you think of marching bands you think of football games and the 7 Nation Army song. People don’t usually think about what goes on to get to the finished product, AKA our show and stand’s tunes. Well you're in luck! I’m going to give you the insider look of a marching band student and what we do to give you our amazing performances at football games and competitions. Usually like every fall sport, we have a camp or workout we have to do during the summer to stay “in shape" with our instruments. Even before the end of school the last year we are given music to look at over the summer and learn. As we get closer to the marching season as summer goes on we have, like every other sport, a camp to bring us all together and practice drill and music. We like to call it band camp. This camp is 2 weeks long where most of our basic marching and show music is covered. Then when school starts we have practice after school every monday, Wednesday, and Friday (excluding game days) from 4- 6pm. Most of our time during practice is spent on the field practicing drill or in the band room when it rains practicing music. I believe that marching band on a highschool level is underappreciated and I hope after you read this article that you will appreciate marching band as much as I do.
